Nine months into staying at home with a baby, and my morning routine had all but disappeared. I ran out of my face wash and found myself using my husband's for over a month. Add this to still not feeling very comfortable in my post-baby body, living in sweatpants and never having much time to take care of myself, and my self-esteem was pretty low.
I wanted to get back into my routine to give myself a boost and invest in self-care, but also have a quick enough routine that it fit into my new role as mama. Taking time to get ready (most) days has a positive influence on our day - I am more willing to head out to the park or invite friends over, and generally, just feel a whole lot better about myself!
But I am very aware that any product I choose to use, Ellington will be exposed to. I am constantly carrying him, hugging him and touching things he ends up putting into his mouth. And of course, I am pumping all that milk for him.
There are several ingredients I try to avoid, including pthalates and parabens, and it can be hard and time-consuming to find clean swaps for all your current products. This is one of the reasons I like companies like Beautycounter and Credo Beauty, where you can shop knowing all the products are free of certain ingredients (see Beautycounter's Never List here and Credo Beauty's Clean Standard here).
In fact, all of the products in my morning routine are from Beautycounter or Credo Beauty! Here is what I use:
1. Beautycounter Facial Oil #1
After rinsing my face (I usually only wash it at night), I put a couple drops of this brightening oil on. After using for just a few days, I noticed a difference! I got several breakouts right after Ellington's birth from the hormones and all the sugary treats people baked for us. My breakouts always leave dark scars, and I have noticed them fading since I started using this oil.
2. Beautycounter Countermatch Adaptive Moisture Lotion
Most days, the facial oil is all the moisture I need. But with winter approaching, I will need some additional moisture, so I add a very tiny amount of this lotion.
3. Ilia Vivid Foundation
I get an even look with this foundation and it doesn't look like I have makeup caked on. It helps get that even skintone I expect from a foundation and provides enough coverage to cover my dark under-eye circles too.
4. Kjaer Weis Cream Blush
This product lasts FOREVER and I like that you only need to purchase the refills after the initial purchase, making this a lower waste option.
5. EcoBrow Brow Defining Wax
I have thin eyebrows, but have always been intimidated to fill them in. That is until I had my makeup done for my wedding. Wow, what a difference this makes! This one is easy to use for a makeup novice like me.
6. W3ll People Expressionist Mascara
Does what I expect of a mascara - adds definition and curl to my lashes without irritating my eyes (especially important since I wear contacts).
7. Beautycounter Sheer Lipstick in Rose
For my lips, I like a sheer color that just accentuates my natural color and makes my whole look come together. I dab a small amount of this on, and it gives me just what I want.
And that's it! I don't always do all of these steps, and usually Ellington is playing on the floor around me while I get ready, but it is nice to focus some time on me!
