5 Things I Do Before 8:00am As A Toddler Mom For An Easier Day

I've always considered myself a morning person. It is when I do my best thinking, when I am most productive, and sets the tone for my day. But now with a toddler, I've had to tighten up my morning routine to ensure both he and I aren't disasters by noon!

 

With some trial and error, I have found that if I can at least do these five things, our day goes so much better.

 

1. My Simple Matcha Latte

 

I am naturally an early-to-bed, early-to-rise person, but even I can use a little help getting started in the morning. I gave up coffee several years ago because my body does not metabolize it well. I would feel jittery, a little nauseous, and crash in the afternoon. Not good!

 

 

I switched to matcha and I haven't looked back. The boost from the caffeine in matcha comes on gently and I don't even notice a dip in my energy later. My recipe is simple these days: 1 teaspoon of Brandless' organic matcha powder, 1 tablespoon of Brandless' coconut oil, hot water and a generous splash of oat milk. I use a handheld milk frother in my mug to cut down on dishes (a parenting win!).

 

2. A Quick Workout

 

I absolutely love group workouts in studios such as barre, spin or pilates. But to consistently workout in the season I am in, I need to workout at home and fit in studio workouts as a treat. I am still healing diastasis recti around my belly button from my pregnancy with Ellington, so I do 10 minutes of exercises focused on that and then add upper body or lower body using movements from my years taking barre and pilates. It takes about 15-30 minutes.

 

I would love to do 60-minute workouts, but a short workout 5-6 times a week has made great improvements in my overall strength and the aches and pains that come from carrying a toddler daily.

 

3. Getting Ready

 

I used to skip getting ready in the early days of motherhood. I categorized regular showers and doing my skincare routine as luxuries, and that it was more important to tidy up the house, make Ellington more food and snacks, or spend time researching his development.

 

 

But I found that feeling somewhat put together is so important for my overall mood, even if we are just heading to the park or the grocery store. A quick shower and skincare routine doesn't take long, but goes a long way.

 

4. A Full Breakfast

 

As Ellington ate more solids, I found myself eating his leftovers for breakfast rather than making my own. But as an active mother and business owner, I need more fuel. I started making a low-fruit smoothie every morning that packs in the nutrients, gives me plenty of energy and leaves me satiated.

 

A key ingredient is the chia seeds. Two tablespoons of chia seeds has 8 grams of fiber (nearly 1/3 of your daily needs). The fiber helps me feel full and kickstart my digestion for the day.

 

8oz plant-based milk

2 large handfuls of greens

1/2 avocado

2 tablespoons of Brandless' chia seeds

1/3 cup frozen blueberries

2 scoops protein powder

 

5. Empty the Dishwasher

 

I never thought such a tiny detail could have such an effect on our day! But if I haven't emptied the dishwasher by lunch time, the counters are full and our pre-nap routine is frantic. So this has become a non-negotiable!
